Unlawful burials to be exhumed and relocated in Mokopane
The Mogalakwena Local Municipality in Limpopo has announced a planned exhumation and relocation process for mortal remains that were unlawfully buried at the cemetery site in Extension 15, Mokopane.
The Municipality confirmed that the site was established without official approval and does not comply with the legal, environmental, or health standards required for a designated burial ground.

According to municipal authorities, the move forms part of ongoing efforts to enforce proper land use management and ensure that all burials take place in regulated, approved facilities.
The exhumed remains will be relocated to the Municipal cemeteries in Extension 17, which meet all infrastructure and regulatory requirements. The exhumation will occur over two days, on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, and Thursday, 27 November 2025.
Authorised specialists will carry out the process in accordance with Department of Health standards, the National Environmental Management Act, and applicable municipal by-laws. Officials assured the community that all procedures will be conducted with sensitivity, dignity, and full respect for the deceased and their families.

The Municipality also highlighted that the Polokwane High Court granted a formal exhumation order on 27 May 2025. This order followed evidence presented by the Municipality demonstrating the illegality of the site and associated health and environmental risks.
The court ruling legally obligates the Municipality to remove and rebury the remains in a lawful cemetery.
Recognising the emotional impact of the process, the Municipality has committed to continuous engagement with affected families.
It further emphasised the importance of maintaining lawful burial practices to protect public health, uphold environmental standards, and preserve community dignity.
