New mine officially opened in Limpopo
President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially opened the Platreef Mine, a major platinum group metals project in Masodi, Mokopane, Limpopo.
Developed by Ivanhoe Mines, the mine employs about 2,500 people and is considered one of South Africa’s most significant new mining investments.
The event drew national attention and was attended by former President Kgalema Motlanthe, Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, and MEC for LEDET Tshitereke Matibe.

The opening marks a major step for the country’s mining sector. Platreef is widely regarded as a strong example of foreign investment and industrial growth.
Its launch comes just before the Qatari Investment Summit and the G20 Summit, helping South Africa showcase its economic potential.
During his speech, President Ramaphosa said the mine reflects partnership and progress.
“This mine stands as a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when government, investors and communities work together. Platreef is not only an engine for economic activity, but also a symbol of renewed confidence in our nation’s future,” he said.
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the mine’s first platinum, palladium, rhodium, nickel, copper and gold concentrate, marking its shift from development to production.

The event also celebrated the opening of the Masodi Wastewater Treatment Works, showing the mine’s commitment to responsible water use and community development.
Platreef is expected to position Limpopo as a growing hub for mining investment and strengthen South Africa’s role in the global minerals market.
