Residents at Leseding informal settlement to be relocated
Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality in Limpopo is considering the relocation of residents from the Leseding informal settlement, Vaalwater extension 5, to create space for the construction of RDP houses.
The Leseding informal settlement has a population of around 600 residents, but fewer than half are eligible for RDP houses. So far, 53 RDP houses have been allocated to formalise 275 stands.

Mayor Annah Mboweni conducted an oversight visit to the Informal Settlement as part of a fact-finding mission on Monday.
Her oversight visit followed residents’ requests that the municipality relocate some of them to pave the way for the construction of RDP houses, saying the piece of land would not be suitable for 53 houses.
Mayor Mboweni, together with Speaker Sinah Langa, Chiefwhip Mokgadi Dayimani, Cllr Khalimi Moima and municipal officials, engaged directly with affected residents to listen to their concerns and to provide updates on the municipality’s efforts to address the matter.

She assured residents that the municipality is working hard to identify and secure appropriate land so residents can be relocated to make way for the construction of additional RDP houses.
“We remain committed to finding sustainable solutions to ensure that qualifying beneficiaries receive their RDP houses,” said Mboweni.
She also expressed concern that some shacks have been built at a discharge point, making it impossible for the municipality to provide sewer and water services
