Mother arrested for murder of her newborn baby
A 21-year-old mother has been arrested for the murder of her newborn baby girl, whom she strangled with a shoe lace and later threw into a pit toilet at Tshitavha village, Vhembe District in Limpopo.
It is reported that on Wednesday, 25 June, at about 14:00, the suspect was at home with her daughter, together with her mother.

The victim was sleeping inside a one-roomed house when her grandmother informed the suspect that she was going to irrigate the crops in the fields. The grandmother of the deceased spent an hour in the fields before she returned.
On arrival, she found a 21-year-old mother sitting on a chair inside a one-roomed house and asked her to wake up the newborn daughter and breastfeed her. But the mother responded by saying her daughter had fallen into a pit toilet.

The grandmother immediately called the neighbours to assist in taking the baby out of the pit toilet. Police, together with members of the Emergency Medical Services [EMS], were summoned and certified a twelve-day-old daughter dead upon their arrival at the scene.
The mother of the deceased confessed that she strangled her with a shoelace until she lost consciousness and later threw her daughter inside the pit toilet. She was immediately placed under arrest on the scene.
