Identity of man who jumped over Tzaneen Dam revealed
Police have released the identity of the man who tragically jumped from one of the twin bridges spanning Tzaneen Dam, Limpopo on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Phillip Bvuma [48], a resident of Xihoko village near Nwamitwa in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality.

Eyewitness accounts detail how Bvuma was spotted wearing a Kaizer Chiefs jersey, climbed onto the bridge’s railing and subsequently jumped into the waters of the dam. The incident prompted a day-long search and rescue operation involving various emergency services. After an extensive search, Bvuma’s body was recovered from the dam at approximately 5:35 PM.

The rescue team worked tirelessly throughout the day to locate and retrieve the body. Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the factors that contributed to Bvuma’s decision.
The incident marks another occurrence at the Tzaneen Dam bridges on the R71, which have become a site of repeated tragedies.
In February 2023, a woman also jumped from the bridge, with her body recovered after a two-hour search. Similarly, in March 2021, a man in his early thirties lost his life after jumping from the same location, with his body recovered after a two-day search.
