Mofokeng brace fires Pirates to victory against Sundowns
A blistering start from Orlando Pirates saw them secure a crucial victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with Relebohile Mofokeng’s early brace proving decisive.
The Buccaneers wasted no time asserting their dominance, racing into a 2-0 lead within the opening five minutes.
Mofokeng, electric in attack, capitalised on defensive lapses to hand Pirates the perfect start and put Sundowns on the back foot from the onset.

Sundowns sought a response and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Pirates’ box in the 13th minute. However, the Bucs’ defensive wall stood firm, frustrating Masandawana’s early attacking efforts.
The visitors continued to probe, with Iqraam Rayners attempting to square a dangerous ball into the box in the 20th minute, only for Mbekezile Mbokazi to make a crucial interception. Pirates then had the woodwork to thank as a Sundowns corner threatened to cut their lead in half. At the other end, Deano van Rooyen’s misplaced cross landed comfortably in the hands of Ronwen Williams.
Lucas Ribeiro came agonisingly close to pulling one back for Sundowns, his header from a corner sailing inches over the crossbar. The Brazilian had another opportunity from a free kick in the 31st minute but failed to trouble Sipho Chaine, dragging his effort wide.

Pirates, eager to extend their lead, saw Deon Hotto test Williams with a powerful drive from a tight angle. Moments later, Mofokeng forced the Sundowns goalkeeper into another save, his relentless attacking display keeping the visitors under pressure.
Masandawana had their chances, with Peter Shalulile heading wide from a corner before Mofokeng once again tested Williams after excellent work from Evidence Makgopa. However, the experienced shot-stopper stood his ground to deny the young attacker.
Mamelodi Sundowns controlled possession in the second half and eventually found a breakthrough in the 66th minute. Iqraam Rayners delivered a precise cross into the box, where Khuliso Mudau met it and slotted the ball past Sipho Chaine, reducing the deficit.
Despite mounting late pressure, Sundowns were unable to find an equalizer, as Orlando Pirates remained resolute in defense to secure a crucial victory.
Both teams will return to Premiership action in early April. Sundowns will host Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, April 5, while Pirates will visit Polokwane City on the 6th.
The result reduces the gap between the Buccaneers and the Brazilians to 15 points, offering some hope for a potential title challenge.
