MEC saddened by horror crash claiming six lives in Waterberg
The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Susani Violet Mathye, has expressed shock and deep sadness following a devastating road accident that claimed six lives on Wednesday, 24 December.
The fatal crash occurred along the R518 road between Mokopane and Marken, within the Mogalakwena Municipality in the Waterberg District. According to preliminary reports from traffic officers at the scene, a light delivery vehicle allegedly lost control before crashing into a bridge.

Six passengers were declared dead at the scene. A further seven passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, with two reported to be in critical condition.
MEC Mathye conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a tragic loss during what should be a time of joy and togetherness.
“Christmas is meant for joy and family gatherings. Unfortunately, lives have been lost. I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wish the injured a speedy recovery. I pray that the Lord comforts them during this difficult time,” said Mathye.
In response to the accident and the increasing number of road fatalities during the festive season, the Department of Transport and Community Safety has announced plans to intensify road safety measures.

Additional traffic officers will be deployed on major routes across the province to curb reckless driving and enforce compliance with traffic laws.
The MEC urged all road users to exercise patience, obey traffic rules and avoid dangerous driving behaviour to prevent further loss of life.
