Limpopo young Scientist takes Maths Innovation to Taiwan
A 17-year-old Karabo Mpuru from Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, is currently representing South Africa at the prestigious Taiwan International Science Fair, that is taking place from 31 January to 7 February 2026.
Karabo, a former learner at Northern Academy in Polokwane, has drawn attention for her groundbreaking research project titled “Finding the constant difference in an Arithmetic sequence.”
Her study demonstrates that two newly developed formulas can accurately determine the common difference in any arithmetic sequence, whether involving even, odd, or other types of numbers.

The innovation is expected to bring practical value to learners, particularly in improving mathematical understanding and reducing the time spent solving sequence problems during examinations.
When asked what it took to achieve this milestone, she said it required grit, resilience, determination, and a bold belief in what was possible.
While her current achievements lie in mathematics, Karabo’s intellectual curiosity extends beyond it. “Recently I’ve developed an interest in neuroscience and how the brain works, integrating it with machine learning,” she explains.

Karabo’s participation highlights the growing talent emerging from Limpopo’s youth and showcases South Africa’s potential in science and innovation.
She is joined at the fair by Yu-Yao Chen, a Grade 11 learner from Curro Durbanville High School in Cape Town, who is also representing the nation.
Karabo encourages younger learners to stay resilient and authentic, even when faced with setbacks, “Rejection is often just redirection,” she says.
