Greater Tzaneen calls for engagement amid shutdown threats
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Mopani in Limpopo has called for a constructive engagement amid shutdown threats by community members. This comes after reports that a group of residents in Nkowankowa is organizing a total shutdown scheduled for Monday.
The individuals have been going door-to-door in Nkowankowa on Sunday, informing local businesses about the planned protest.

The shutdown is in response to ongoing dissatisfaction with the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s handling of power outages, load reduction issues, and the ongoing water crisis. In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the Municipality says they acknowledge the frustrations of our residents but are working tirelessly to find solutions.
“We acknowledge the frustrations of our residents and reaffirm our commitment to working tirelessly with all relevant stakeholders. Including Eskom and the Mopani District Municipality, to find sustainable solutions to these issues,” said communications and Marketing manager Neville Ndlala.

TZANEEN MUNICIPALITY HAS URGED RESIDENTS TO ENGAGE IN TALKS AFTER FEARS OF A SHUTDOWN
“However, while we respect the right to protest, we strongly urge residents to engage through structured and peaceful means to prevent disruptions that could negatively impact businesses, schools, and essential services.
“We must also clarify that we have been engaging with Hlakahlaka, an organisation representing the residents of Nkowankowa, regarding these same issues. These engagements have been fruitful and progressive, and Hlakahlaka has stated that they are not involved in the planned shutdown.”
“Law enforcement authorities have been engaged to ensure the safety of our people, businesses, and public infrastructure should the shutdown proceed. We also urge the organisers of the proposed shutdown to conduct any protest within the parameters of the law and to take full responsibility for any damages or harm that may arise as a result.
“The Municipality remains open to engagement and encourages community members to use available channels to address concerns. It is important to note that the leaders of the proposed shutdown have not engaged or reached out to the Municipality to discuss their grievances.”
