AfriForum to plant more crosses on N1 Limpopo

Civil rights organization AfriForum has announced plans to plant more crosses at the Plaasmoorde Monument on the N1 in Limpopo next month.

This follows a preparation exercise held on Friday, August 28, when AfriForum’s Moot neighbourhood team and Polokwane branch, together with volunteers and organisers of the White Cross Monument, joined forces to prepare the site ahead of the annual cross-planting ceremony in September.

The Witkruis Monument, also known as the White Cross Monument or Plaasmoorde Monument, is a privately operated memorial situated on the slopes of Ysterberg along the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane.

According to AfriForum, the monument serves as a memorial to victims of farm attacks and farm murders in South Africa.

The monument was established in 2004 and commemorates farmers and their family members who were killed in farm attacks since 1994.

The site features approximately 3,000 white-painted metal crosses, including a large central formation and a smaller section of red crosses at the top. New crosses are added during annual ceremonies to represent lives lost during the preceding year.

The monument has also become a symbol of the security concerns and frustrations expressed by sections of the white Afrikaner farming community over violent crime in South Africa.

The memorial is specifically dedicated to white English- and Afrikaans-speaking farmers and their family members who were killed in farm attacks.
