Zimbabwean nationals’ goods remain stranded in Mankweng

Trucks loaded with goods belonging to Zimbabwean nationals remain stationed outside the Mankweng Police Station, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, as efforts to transport the goods back to Zimbabwe continue.

Some of the owners remain at the police station, while others were repatriated to Zimbabwe last month. The affected nationals had been living in various parts of Limpopo, including Lebowakgomo and Seshego.

According to the truck drivers, they are awaiting a 50% upfront payment from the Zimbabwean government to cover the costs of transporting the goods, including fuel and toll fees.

The drivers say the trucks cannot proceed with the journey until the required deposit is received. The situation has left several trucks and their cargo stranded outside the police station as the affected parties await further arrangements for the goods to be transported back to Zimbabwe.

One of the people who have been waiting, Herbert Masimba, is appealing to the Zimbabwean government to also pay for transport to assist them.

“What we want the Zimbabwean government to do for us is to look for truckers who are willing to take these goods from here to Zimbabwe,” told SABC News.

“Once they drop off these goods, the government should pay them and give them a binding contract stating that they will be paid once they have completed the work.

“That is what we need the trucks for now. Our government has promised that buses will still be coming. We are compiling a list of people who want to be repatriated back home.”
