Human remains discovered at Polokwane cemetery
Human remains were discovered within the vicinity of a Polokwane Municipality cemetery on Friday, 5 June 2026.
According to the municipality, the remains were found in a bushy area on the cemetery premises and were not located near any marked graves.
Members of the South African Police Service [SAPS] in Limpopo attended the scene and have launched a formal investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the discovery and to determine the identity of the deceased.

The municipality has urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from speculation or the sharing of unverified information while investigations are ongoing.
“We are deeply concerned by this discovery and we extend our appreciation to the police and other role players for their swift response and ongoing investigation,” said Polokwane Executive Mayor, John Mpe.
“At this stage, we urge the public to allow the authorities the space to conduct their work with the necessary care and professionalism. It is important that we avoid speculation and allow verified facts to guide our understanding of this matter.
