Woman and child killed in N1 involving Dr Motsoaledi vehicle
A woman and her child were killed after they were struck by the official vehicle of Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi on the N1 near Bela-Bela on Saturday, 09 May 2026.
Preliminary investigations suggest the woman was attempting to cross the road with her two children, one of whom was strapped to her back.

The family was reportedly trying to reach the scene of an earlier accident in which the woman’s husband had allegedly been struck and killed by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.
Police say the woman and her children were then involved in a collision with the Minister’s official vehicle. Tragically, the mother and baby died from their injuries.

According to SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the Minister, his close protector, and the driver immediately stopped at the scene and remained there until police and emergency medical services arrived, in line with standard protocol.
“Statements were subsequently obtained from those present at the scene,” said Mathe.
She added that two separate culpable homicide cases are under investigation, with the circumstances surrounding both incidents forming part of ongoing police investigations.
“The SAPS extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time. IPID has taken over the investigations as both drivers involved are SAPS members,” she said.
