Grandfather’s legacy drives Morato to transform rural agriculture
Inspired by the lessons and values instilled by her grandfather, Bela-Bela agripreneur Morato Malatji is steadily building a name for herself in the agricultural sector through Silas & Co Farms in Radium, Limpopo.
Growing up around farming, Malatji says her grandfather’s dedication, discipline, and work ethic shaped her passion for agriculture from an early age.
Today, those lessons continue to guide her as she leads the women-owned family enterprise focused on livestock production and agro-processing.

Operating on 21 hectares, Silas & Co Farms produces beef biltong, frozen chicken, and chilli-infused oil while also embracing sustainable farming methods, including recycling broiler litter into cattle feed supplements and exploring biogas solutions.
Beyond farming, the business is creating opportunities for women and young people through employment, mentorship, and skills development within the local community.

Despite challenges such as limited land and poor road infrastructure, Malatji continues to grow the business through innovation and strategic partnerships, with ambitions of expanding into meat processing, retail, and export markets.

For Malatji, farming is more than business — it is about preserving a family legacy. She is already introducing her three daughters to agriculture, ensuring that the knowledge and passion passed down by her grandfather continues through future generations.
Silas & Co Farms will also host a Farmers Day event on 20 May 2026 in partnership with Food for Mzansi, bringing together farmers, SMMEs, and agricultural stakeholders from across Limpopo.
