Limpopo man [29] arrested for rape of an elderly woman aged 89

A 29-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged rape of an 89-year-old elderly woman at Nyavani village, outside Malamulele in Limpopo, in the early hours of Saturday, 26 April 2026.

It is alleged that an 89-year-old woman was sleeping alone at her residence when an unknown person intruded into her home.

The suspect reportedly entered her room, threatened her, and demanded money. When the victim indicated that she had no money, the suspect allegedly threatened to kill her and thereafter raped her.

After the incident, the suspect reportedly fell asleep inside the victim’s house. She managed to escape and called for assistance from neighbours. A community member entered the house and found the suspect asleep, where he was positively identified.

Police were summoned to the scene, and the suspect was arrested. He is currently under police guard at a local hospital following injuries sustained after being assaulted by community members.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the arrest of the suspect following assistance by community members.

Meanwhile, she also warned community members not to take the law into their own hands. The suspect is expected to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court soon.
