MEC Makamu hands over new vehicles to two kingdoms
Limpopo MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Basikopo Makamu handed BMW X5 vehicles to the Bapedi Kingship and Balobedu Queenship respectively.
Her Majesty Queen Regent Manyaku Thulare received her vehicle on Wednesday 22 April 2026, while Queen Masalanabo Modjadji VII’s vehicle was delivered on Thursday 23 April 2026.
Makamu says the handover is part of the government’s mandate to support and strengthen traditional leadership institutions as well as ensuring that leaders have the necessary tools of trade to serve their communities effectively.

The department added that the gesture goes beyond transport, symbolising a continued effort to preserve cultural heritage and empower traditional leadership across Limpopo.
“We are happy that our Traditional leadership’s dignity is intact. They will now be able to perform their responsibilities with dignity,” said MEC Makamu.
“These vehicles are also an affirmation of the government’s unwavering commitment to support and strengthen the institution of traditional leadership.”

The department says Initially, R110 million was approved in 2023/24 for two year/phased purchasing and allocation of vehicles for Senior Traditional Leaders.

For the 2023/24 financial year, the Province allocated R55 million to purchase 102 vehicles for Senior Traditional Leaders. For the 2024/25 financial year, the Province allocated R38,5 million to purchase 60 vehicles for Senior Traditional Leaders.
“We are purchasing nine vehicles for newly recognized Senior Traditional Leaders and those whose matters [disputes, court judgements, etc] are resolved and they are in good standing,” added the department.
“Senior Traditional Leaders are allowed to choose vehicles to the total value of R550 000 and are also allowed to top up to purchase their preferred vehicles. The department uses an RT contract which allows us to purchase from the dealership directly, instead of tendering.”
