Tzaneen named cleanest Municipality in South Africa
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality [GTM] in Mopani, Limpopo has been named the cleanest municipality in South Africa at the National Waste Management Awards.
The awards were hosted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment on Thursday, 19 March 2026 at the Presidential Hotel in Bloemfontein.
GTM was recognised for setting and maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness in the country through consistent efforts, active community engagement, and effective waste management practices.

These initiatives have contributed to creating spaces that are healthy, safe, and welcoming for all residents.

Mayor Gerson Molapisane expressed his excitement about the latest achievement. “This award reaffirms our continuous environmental management efforts, which were also recently recognised by the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, which named us the winner of the provincial Greenest Municipality Competition,” he said.
“It is a true demonstration of the hard work and dedication of our staff and management in ensuring that Greater Tzaneen remains clean, green, and beautiful.”

The accolade was received by Maggy Machumele, Manager for Waste Management:
“This is a great achievement for GTM to be named the cleanest municipality in the country. It means we must not only maintain the standard but continuously improve.”
The award adds to GTM’s growing list of achievements, including securing five awards reflecting good governance and responsible spending at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Limpopo “Big Moss” Municipal Audit Awards.
They were also named the best-performing municipality in support of the property industry in Limpopo Province by the South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA).
