Lepelle Northern Water issues update on Phalaborwa visit
The Lepelle Northern Water [LNW] have issued a progress update following a visit by its executive committee to assess damaged infrastructure in Phalaborwa on Wednesday.
Critical infrastructure within the Phalaborwa Scheme sustained significant damage, resulting in water supply interruptions across affected areas, following the recent floods in Limpopo. This has affected the water supply to communities in the area.
The visit, led by Chief Executive Officer, Dr Cornelius Ruiters, accompanied by the acting Executive Manager for Operations and Maintenance, Ms Nthabiseng Mohobela; Acting Regional Manager for Operations and Maintenance, Ms Leah Musetha; and Chief Risk Officer, Ms Susan Satekge was meant to assess progress on ongoing repair works to the damaged infrastructure.

Dr Ruiters said LNW was encouraged by the progress made in the work done so far to ensure water is restored in the area. Dr Ruiters added that their goal is to achieve full water supply restoration to Phalaborwa by the end of March or early April.
“This will ensure sustainable access to water for all residents and communities, reaffirming our commitment to delivering reliable basic services,” he said.

“The visit to the affected areas allowed us to evaluate ongoing work and inspect the structural integrity of critical infrastructure, including the bridge.
“There is still work underway on the radial gates, as well as on key mechanical and electrical components, particularly the pumps and motors.”
“Furthermore, within this month, we will appoint contractors to fully restore the 560mm pipeline. Our team is working diligently to finalise procurement processes and appoint the necessary service providers.
“We are also engaging with Palabora Mining Company to address the damaged section of the 560mm pipeline that runs through their property, including its rerouting,” he said.
