Traffic officer assaulted during warrant operation in Mokopane
The Mogalakwena Local Municipality Traffic Division has confirmed that a warrant of arrest operation conducted at a busy intersection in Mokopane, Limpopo led to the arrest of a motorist who allegedly assaulted a traffic officer.
According to the municipality, Traffic Officer Johannes Labuschagne, widely known as “Lappies,” was attacked while executing his official duties. The incident occurred while officers were carrying out law enforcement operations targeting wanted suspects and traffic violations.

Authorities say the motorist, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, resisted arrest and physically assaulted the officer during the procedure. A criminal case has since been opened with the South African Police Service, and investigations are currently underway.
Further inquiries revealed that the suspect is employed as a traffic officer at the Thabazimbi Local Municipality, raising concerns about law enforcement conduct.

Municipal officials stressed that the suspect’s occupation does not place him above the law. They strongly condemned the assault, reaffirming their commitment to accountability and public safety.
The municipality urged residents to respect traffic officials and warned that reckless behaviour, violence, and drunk driving would be met with the full might of the law.
