R10 billion needed to rebuild Limpopo after deadly floods
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba says the provincial government will require close to R10 billion to fully recover from the devastating floods that have battered the province since December 2025.
Addressing the media on Thursday, 05 February, Ramathuba revealed that preliminary damage assessments paint a grim picture of widespread destruction to infrastructure and communities.
“Since December 2025, we have experienced tragic losses, with 27 fatalities reported thus far, alongside approximately 3,194 houses affected and around 439 roads rendered unusable, measuring an estimated 600 kilometres,” she said.

The provincial government has already committed R800 million towards immediate recovery and relief interventions while awaiting additional support from the National Disaster Management Centre following the disaster declaration.
Ramathuba said government leaders have been visiting affected areas to assess damage and coordinate urgent responses, including restoring access roads and essential services.
“It is clear to us that Limpopo requires a comprehensive overhaul to restore normalcy to the lives of our residents,” she stated.
She added that the province remains hopeful that national intervention will accelerate rebuilding efforts.

“We remain hopeful that we will successfully rebuild Limpopo from this disaster with the resources we are beginning to mobilize,” said Ramathuba.
Flood damage has also forced the postponement of the 2026 Marula Festival, with funds redirected to humanitarian relief and municipal rebuilding efforts.
