Limpopo government warns against fly-by-night colleges
The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) has issued a strong warning to prospective students to be vigilant against bogus higher education institutions, particularly during January and February, which are considered peak seasons for fly-by-night colleges.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, the department cautioned Grade 12 learners from the Class of 2025 and other National Senior Certificate recipients seeking further education to verify the legitimacy of institutions before enrolling.

LEDET said unregistered institutions often offer fake or unrecognised qualifications, charge exorbitant fees, refuse to refund registration payments, and pose risks to public safety due to incompetence. Such practices, it added, also contribute to high unemployment rates.
“The consequences of enrolling at bogus colleges are endless,” the department warned, urging applicants to confirm accreditation with the Department of Higher Education and Training before making any payments.

LEDET further emphasised that legitimate institutions are legally required to disclose all programme and registration fees transparently, with no hidden costs.
Prospective students were encouraged to research institutions thoroughly, verify refund policies, and avoid being misled by false promises of quick qualifications.
