Taxi operators arrested after confrontation with police on the N1
Three taxi operators were arrested after confronting and threatening police officers during an anti-smuggling operation on the N1 near Musina, Limpopo on Thursday, 8 January 2026.
Limpopo police said members of the Provincial Tracking Team, travelling in an unmarked vehicle near the Sasol garage, were stopped by a white Toyota Corolla fitted with white strobe lights and taxi patrol stickers.

The suspects allegedly believed that the vehicle was transporting hitchhikers without their permission.
They reportedly pointed a firearm at the officers, threatened them with a sjambok and attempted to exercise policing powers. The officers identified themselves, reacted ttactically and arrested the suspects after a brief attempt to flee.
The three suspects, aged 32 to 49, face charges including pointing of a firearm, unlawful use of white strobe lights, crimen injuria, reckless and negligent driving, and intimidation.

Police seized a 9mm pistol with two magazines, 33 rounds of ammunition, a sjambok, a white strobe light and a notebook allegedly linked to extortion activities. The vehicle was also confiscated.
The suspects are due to appear before the Musina Magistrate Court on Friday, 9 January 2026. Investigations continue.
