Limpopo farmer wins emerging Farmer of the year
Tshililo Mafuka, Director of Bob and Maggie Agriculture in Musina, Limpopo, has been named Tiger Brands’ first Emerging Farmer of the Year for his contribution to tomato production used in products such as All Gold tomato sauce.
Mafuta’s farming journey began humbly, with him planting his own seedlings on a small plot of land.

For nearly five years, he faced significant challenges, including limited resources and harsh climatic conditions, before receiving crucial support from Tiger Brands three years ago. That partnership proved to be a turning point, enabling him to transition into commercial farming.
With the backing he received, Mafuka expanded his farming operations from just one hectare to almost eight hectares, significantly increasing production and creating opportunities for growth within the local agricultural sector.

Despite his success, Mafuka says water scarcity remains the biggest challenge in the Musina area, which receives very low rainfall. Access to farming machinery and equipment also continues to be a hurdle for many small-scale and emerging farmers.
The Emerging Farmer of the Year award recognises Mafuka’s resilience, determination and growth, while highlighting the importance of partnerships between established companies and emerging farmers in strengthening South Africa’s agricultural value chain.
