Prof. Hlathi to be laid to rest in Mozambique
The body of respected traditional health practitioner, Professor Sylvester Mbaimbai Hlathi, departed Malamulele, Limpopo, on Wednesday evening as it made its dignified journey to Mozambique for his official funeral and burial.
Prof Hlathi passed away on Wednesday, 26 November, following an illness, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that spans more than four decades.

Born in 1951, Prof Hlathi later settled in Polokwane, where he built his life, career, and reputation as one of the region’s most influential traditional health practitioners. He graduated in 1982 and went on to serve African traditional medicine for 40 years, positioning himself as a pioneer of sustainable trends and progressive practices within the sector.
A memorial service in his honor was held on Wednesday in Xitlhelani Village, Malamulele, where mourners described him as a visionary leader, an effective communicator, and a passionate mentor.
As the Founder and CEO of the SADC University of African Medicine, Prof Hlathi played a critical role in formalizing indigenous healing systems and advocating for their recognition within modern health structures.

Throughout his career, he championed awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS, ritual killings, and moral regeneration, using his voice and platform to educate, protect, and empower communities across Southern Africa.
He will be laid to rest on Thursday, 4 December 2025, at Mayiveni Village in the Gaza Province of Mozambique. His passing marks the end of an era, but his teachings, leadership, and contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.
