LEDET calls for thoughtful waste-picking to limit littering
The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism(LEDET) has expressed concern over the growing problem of littering caused by improper waste-picking practices across municipalities.
According to the Department, many Waste Pickers tear refuse bags before municipal collection, leaving heaps of exposed rubbish scattered on streets and sidewalks.

This situation is worsened at night when stray dogs roam freely, further spreading the waste and creating untidy and unhealthy conditions in communities.
While acknowledging the valuable contribution that Waste Pickers make to recycling and landfill reduction, the Department has urged them to adopt greater care for the environment during their daily activities.
It emphasized that waste-picking remains an important part of the recycling chain, helping extend the life of landfills and reducing disposal costs for municipalities, and that they fully support waste-picking.
