Emergency responders, including paramedics, fire services and law enforcement, rushed to the scene where light drizzle made visibility poor and further complicated rescue efforts.
Motorists travelling along the busy highway were met with long queues as traffic came to an abrupt halt, with vehicles backed up for several kilometers in both directions.
Authorities have urged drivers to remain patient while emergency teams work to clear the roadway and attend to the injured. Rainy weather conditions, combined with the severity of the crash, have resulted in slower operations as personnel navigate the wet and unstable scene.
