Municipality unveils R7 billion smart City in Lebowakgomo
The Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality in Limpopo has officially launched the R7 billion Lebowakgomo Smart City, a 160-hectare catalytic development set to transform the area’s socio-economic landscape.
Centred on the Lebowakgomo Business Area, the Smart City is expected to spur the establishment of more than 500 new businesses, create thousands of jobs, and introduce modern urban infrastructure aimed at positioning the municipality as a competitive economic hub.

According to the Municipality, the development will integrate technologies from the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions, including smart grids, high-speed broadband, renewable energy systems, green building solutions, and AI-driven water management technologies.
These plans were revealed during the sod-Turning ceremony and Investor Conference in Lebowakgomo on Friday, 21 November.
The event was attended by the MEC for Limpopo Provincial Treasury, Kgabo Mahoai, the Chairperson of SALGA, John Mpe, Councillors, Traditional Leaders, as well as international and local investors.

Lepelle-Nkumpi Mayor, Meriam Molala, reaffirmed the Municipality’s dedication to driving sustainable economic development.

She further emphasised that the Business Area [BA] development lies at the core of the Smart Town vision, describing it as the “engine room” of a prosperous, resilient, and green future.
Molala outlined key budget requirements, including R35 million for ICT broadband and R100 million for strategic road expansions, such as upgrades along the Orrie Baragwanath Panorama Route. She also announced the establishment of the Local Economic Development [LED] Forum to strengthen coordination and investor partnerships.
