The Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality in Limpopo has demolished several abandoned buildings in the Marble Hall CBD after they were illegally occupied.
The buildings were turned into informal dwellings and trading spaces near the taxi rank.

The municipality said the operation followed a resolution aimed at addressing safety, health, and urban management concerns.
The structures had become crime hotspots and posed serious risks due to years of neglect and structural decay.
Municipal spokesperson Nape Life said the abandoned buildings in Marble Hall also violated planning and zoning bylaws, undermining town renewal efforts.
Unlawful occupants were given a 14-day notice, which expired on 9 November 2025, paving the way for the demolition.

“The Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality remains committed to ensuring public safety, upholding by-law compliance, and promoting well-planned, sustainable urban environments across its jurisdiction,” said Life.
“In addition, the buildings did not comply with the required health and safety standards and were found to be in contravention of municipal planning and zoning by-laws, undermining spatial development and town renewal efforts.”
