A leopard spotted roaming in Motetema
Residents of Motetema, Limpopo and nearby villages have been warned to remain on high alert following reports of a leopard sighting in the area.
According to the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality, relevant authorities have already been notified and are actively tracking the animal. It was first spotted in the vicinity of the Motetema Mountains on Sunday, 21 September 2025.

Municipality spokesperson Simon Makua has assured residents that the local municipality is taking the situation seriously.
“The safety of our residents remains our top priority. We urge community members not to approach the leopard under any circumstances,” he was quoted by Sekhukhune Times.
Makua also confirmed that the municipality, in collaboration with the professional wildlife rangers, has been deployed to monitor and capture the leopard. Community members are strongly advised not to approach the leopard if seen, as it may pose a danger.

“Humane and safe methods are being used to ensure the animal is removed without harm,” he said.
“To safeguard residents, joint patrols with community safety structures are underway, with special attention to high-risk areas. Community members are urged to avoid bushy or isolated areas, especially at night, and to keep children and livestock indoors and secured at all times,” cautioned Makua.
