MEC issues update on acid attack survivor Neo Hlanga
Limpopo MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego has issued an update on the recovery of Mampeu Neo Hlanga from Zebediela, who survived a horrific acid attack late last year.
Hlanga was doused with acid by her ex-boyfriend’s jealous former partner in Zebediela, Limpopo, leaving her with permanent scars on her face and body.

She was initially admitted to Zebediela Hospital following the assault, before being urgently referred to Mankweng Tertiary Hospital for specialised care due to severe septic burns.
Upon arrival, she was admitted to the female surgical ward, where she began her long and complex medical journey.
During her five-month stay at Mankweng Hospital, Ms Hlanga underwent multiple surgical procedures as follows:
17 /12/2024, she went to the theatre for the debridement of the scalp and skin graft of the chest and right upper limb.
13/01/2025, she underwent a skin graft of the right thigh and left forearm and left ectroplan release and skin graft
08/04/2025, she went to the theatre for ectroplan release and left shoulder skin graft.
09/04/2025, she did an ectroplan release and right shoulder skin graft

Following these, she received assessment and care for the provision of pressure garments, which are vital for burn recovery and scar management.
She was officially discharged on 18 April 2025, after months of intensive care, physical recovery, and emotional resilience. She was later referred back to Mankweng Hospital for further evaluation and treatment at the Eye Ward.
“Her clinical team continues to monitor her progress closely, and additional procedures will be considered once she has sufficiently recovered,” said MEC Mashego.
“The MEC for Health condemns gender-based violence in all its forms and applauds the healthcare professionals at both Zebediela and Mankweng Hospitals for their tireless efforts in providing high-quality care to Ms Hlanga.
“The Department of Health remains committed to supporting her ongoing recovery journey and ensuring access to the necessary reconstructive and rehabilitative services.”
