Several shops burnt in Polokwane CBD blaze
A fire broke out in Polokwane CBD, Limpopo, affecting several shops at the corner of Excelsior and Paul Kruger streets on Monday afternoon.
Among the businesses damaged is Hungry Lion, which had only opened its doors less than a month ago.

Thick smoke could be seen rising from the area as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The cause of the fire in the Polokwane CBD is not yet known. No injuries have been reported at this stage.

But according to various unverified reports, an anonymous worker from a TipTop store claimed the blaze was started by an iron that was allegedly left on by the shop owners who had gone to prayers.
Meanwhile, the Polokwane Municipality confirmed that its fire and rescue services responded swiftly to the incident.
“Their efforts ensured that the blaze was contained before it spread to neighbouring properties, sparing the city from greater devastation,” said Municipality spokesperson Thipa Selala.
“We are deeply relieved that no injuries or casualties were reported. While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, our thoughts are with those affected, whose livelihoods have been shaken by this tragedy.
“In times of crisis, Polokwane stands not only ready to respond, but also to walk in empathy and solidarity with its people.”
