Madlanga commission begins with its hearings
The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into criminality, political interference, and corruption in the criminal justice system has officially begun with its hearings.
The establishment of the Inquiry follows an explosion of allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on 6 July 2025.

Among other issues, Mkhwanazi accused senior politicians and police of shielding criminal networks and blocking probes. He also made claims that the Political Killings Task Team was unlawfully disbanded.
This led to the establishment of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry, chaired by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
The commission is estimated to cost R147.9 million, leading many to question whether it will yield any significant reforms.

General Mkhwanazi took the stand as the commission’s first witness on Wednesday. He was questioned by evidence leader Advocate Mahlape Sello, SC, on the origins of the document that formed the basis of the 6 July briefing.
“I must indicate that the July 6 briefing was the result of collective efforts by various units within the SAPS,” said Mkhwanazi.
“It reflects the shared concerns of officers across different ranks who are committed to resolving these issues so we can serve with honour and dignity.”
