Musina Mayor Godfrey Mawela addresses resignation speculation
The Mayor of Musina Local Municipality in Vhembe, Godfrey Mawela, has clarified what is purported to be his resignation letter.
The letter dated Monday, 8 September, titled “Resignation to ensure stability of Musina Local Municipality” has been circulating across social media platforms.

The letter reads: “Today, I am formally resigning as the Mayor of MLM as of midnight on 8 September 2025.
To have served in this role has been one of the greatest honours of my life. There is no greater privilege, I believe, than to have been chosen to public office to represent my fellow residents.
One of my core goals as Mayor has always been to ensure the stability of the multiparty in MLM, without which service delivery suffers. I do not want the political instability that has taken place in Mogalakwena and Thabazimbi to take place in Musina.
I resign today, because I believe it is in the best interest of the continued stability of the council. Being Mayor of the SEZ town has not been without its difficulties, but I have embraced every challenge that has come my way in the execution of my duties, all of which have allowed for my own personal development.
I resign today not in frustration, resentment or anger, but in peace, knowing that I have been given an incredible opportunity and have fulfilled my duties to the best of my ability.”

But in a response on the Municipality Facebook page on Monday, Mawela refuted the claims, calling the letter fake.
“I have noted with serious concern a FAKE resignation letter circulating on social media, penned by a faceless person pretending to be myself,” he said.
“I want to assure the people of Musina that I’m still in office and I still carry the public confidence to make Musina a better place to stay.
“Law enforcement agencies are following leads to bring the perpetrator of this misleading fake letter to book. Together we can build a prosperous Musina for all.”
