Learners hospitalised after food poisoning at Limpopo school
Learners from Mahuntsi Secondary School in Xitlhelani Village, Vhembe, in Limpopo were allegedly hospitalised as a result of suspected food poisoning.
According to the Department of Education in Limpopo, Learners reported cases of vomiting and diarrhoea after allegedly consuming food purchased from hawkers operating near the school premises

The affected learners were immediately provided with care, and parents were notified to ensure further medical attention. 33 learners were rushed to the hospital, one was discharged, and 32 were kept overnight for observation.
It is said that the school administration has since taken swift action to safeguard the health and safety of learners.

Measures implemented include: Immediate suspension of hawkers operating close to the school until investigations are concluded, ongoing medical observation and support for the affected learners, including engagement with parents and stakeholders regarding food safety.
“The Department emphasises that the health and safety of learners remains a top priority,” said department spokesperson Mike Maringa.
“National School Nutrition Programme [NSNP] officials are on the ground checking the food storage and utensils that are used at the school to determine the source of food contamination and to ensure such an incident does not occur again.”
