Why X went down on Monday
Owner of Social media platform X, Elon Musk, has explained why it was down multiple times across the globe on Monday. The platform was facing intermittent outages not only in South Africa but across the world.
The number of outage reports rose to around 26 579 across the globe after falling briefly, user-submitted data on the outage-tracking website showed. It was as high as 40,000 earlier in the day.

The last outage on the platform happened in August 2024, when 66 percent of users reported experiencing problems. The South African-born billionaire bought Twitter in October 2022. It officially became X.com in July 2023.

“There was [still is] a massive cyberattack against X,” he posted. “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”
A source in the internet infrastructure industry also said it had been hit by several waves of denial of service beginning about 9.45 am. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity as the person was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.
