Update on Eden Square Mall Fire in Phalaborwa
The Mopani District Municipality has issued an update on the fire that broke out at Eden Square Mall, Phalaborwa, on Monday.
A fire has broken out at the Pick ‘n Pay store at the mall earlier in the morning. It is said that two stores have been completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Fire fighters, from the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s Disaster Management team, in collaboration with the Mopani District Disaster Management team, worked diligently to contain the fire, preventing further spread to surrounding buildings.
The disaster management teams reportedly arrived on the scene within an impressive 10 minutes. They initiated immediate efforts to contain the blaze.

The teams promptly called upon additional support from the South African National Defence Force [SANDF], Phalaborwa Mining Company [PMC], and Foskor, who all contributed significantly to the fire fighting efforts.
“To ensure effective communication and coordination, a war room was immediately established,” said Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor Merriam Malatji.
“This strategic center will serve as the central point for disseminating accurate and timely updates to the community and all relevant stakeholders throughout the ongoing operation.
“The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents and businesses.”

Executive Mayor Shayi has expressed his appreciation for the action taken by the Ba-Phalaborwa team and all assisting stakeholders. He commended their professionalism and dedication in mitigating the impact of the fire.
In a short statement on Monday night, the Mopani District said there were no injuries reported in the incident. The cause of the fire is also under investigation. Further updates are also expected to be provided in the next few days.
