Mental Health patient kills another at Philadelphia Hospital
A 45-year-old mental health patient was found on top of a lifeless 33-year-old fellow patient, covered in blood, and allegedly biting the deceased’s genitals at Philadelphia Hospital psychiatric ward in Dennilton, Limpopo. The violent incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at approximately 02:00.
Officers on patrol reportedly responded to reports of an assault at the hospital and discovered a horrific crime scene inside a locked room.

The victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, along with multiple injuries, including missing teeth. The suspect had also been shot in both legs, allegedly by a security officer attempting to intervene. He was immediately placed under police guard and is currently receiving medical treatment.

During the incident, a security guard sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh, reportedly caused by a ricocheting bullet fired by his colleague. Several spent cartridges were recovered at the scene.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the violent attack.
“This is a deeply disturbing and gruesome incident that has left the community in shock. The safety of both patients and healthcare workers remains a priority, and we will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted to uncover the circumstances that led to this tragic incident. We commend the officers for their swift response.”
Police investigations are ongoing, with further details to be provided in due course.
