MEC express dissatisfaction with Marapong Residential Units delay
Limpopo MEC for CoGHSTA Basikopo Makamu has expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of progress at the Marapong Community Residential Units [CRU]. On Thursday, MEC Makamu conducted an oversight visit at the construction site under the Lephalale Local Municipality.
The visit to the 514-unit project construction site assessed the progress and attended to challenges experienced by contractor Rheiland Construction since the project commenced in the 2016/17 Financial Year.

After it was initially scheduled to be completed by 30 April 2025, MEC Makamu has confirmed that it will no longer be the case.
“From what we have seen, the project has moved drastically. However, we are still not satisfied as it will not be completed by 30 April 2025 as we had intended but by 30 June 2025,” he said.

DELAY IN THE COMPLETION OF THE MARAPONG RESIDENTIAL UNITS CONSTRUCTION IS A CONCERN TO MEC BASIKOPO MAKAMU
MEC Makamu and the Rheiland Construction will meet on 17 February to review the current plan.
Meanwhile, MEC Makamu, Waterberg District Municipality Executive Mayor, Jack Maeko and Lephalale Local Municipality Mayor, Aaron Mokgetle also conducted a sod turning ceremony at Altoodstyd where the department is to construct 200 BNG houses for beneficiaries who were relocated from where the CRU is being built and do not qualify to occupy the 514 units at Marapong.
“As today also marks the commencement of construction of the 200 BNG houses, the project will be completed by 30 April 2025,” he revealed.
His visit to Lephalale Local Municipality concluded at the Paarl Water Purification and Sewer Plant that is in the process of refurbishment and at 22 percent completion. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of August.
