Maladministration and corruption conduct collapsing GNT
The corruption allegations and financial losses within Great North Transport [GNT] in Limpopo, which services communities around the province, have left it in a state of collapse. This may soon leave the poor working class without an affordable mode of transport.
Several buses operating in the rural areas of the province are in bad conditions to transport people to their respective places.

The state entity bus company GNT which falls under the Limpopo Department of Economic Development and Tourism [LEDET] is struck by several allegations of corrupt elements including fraud with an amount of R10 million owed to the diesel supplier.
The Special Investigating Unit is probing the conduct of how the Bus Company appointed the contractors. The maladministration, fruitless and wasteful expenditure including mismanagement of diesel supplies concerns will be amongst the sectors to be investigated. President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed Proclamation 246 of 2025 for SIU to probe and examine whether the payments for the contractors appointed by GNT were adhering to the National Treasury guidelines. This comes after the suspicions of irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure and financial losses at GNT.
The unlawful and improper conduct suspected to have occurred between January 2002 and January 2025 will be the main focus of the SIU. Any evidence of criminal conduct to be uncovered during the investigations will be sent to the National Prosecuting Authorities for actions against the perpetrators.

CALLS FOR GREAT NORTH TRANSPORT TO BE PLACED UNDER ADMINISTRATION AMID CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS
Democratic Alliance leader in Limpopo Jacques Smalle is calling for the state-financed bus company to be placed under administration. His utterance comes after the recent liquidation application served to the bus company by the Sheriff. The application was made following the GNT’s failure to pay the service provider which supplied them with diesel the amount of R10 million for the fuel supplied to the buses last year.
Spokesperson for Limpopo Government Ndavhe Ramakuela says they welcome the proclamation.
“The Limpopo government has welcomed the proclamation and urges all affected to cooperate with the agencies involved in the investigation so that the matter is laid to rest,” he said.
