Zebediela toddlers who died of Cascabela leaves laid to rest
Two-year-old toddlers Katlego Machaba and Koketso Kekana from Mogoto Village in Zebediela, Limpopo were laid to rest on Friday morning.
The two were amongst five children between the ages of 1 to 5 said to have been playing outside one of the bereaved families’ home when they consumed the deadly leaves from a Cascabela Thevetia tree, commonly known as Yellow Oleander. The incident happened on Friday, 17 January 2025.

The funeral service was attended by amongst others the Mayor of Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality, Dr Meriam Molala. She was accompanied by the Executive Committee Members (EXCO) and Ward 9 Cllr. Dolly Mahlobogoane.
“On behalf of the entire municipality, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” said Mayor Molala.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time. May you find strength and comfort in the love and support that surrounds you.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected families and are committed to providing any necessary assistance. May the memories of your loved ones be a blessing to you, and may they rest in peace,” she concluded.
The Cascabela Thevetia tree is native to tropical and subtropical regions and is found in many of our villages. It is toxic and dangerous. It is popular for its vibrant yellow flowers that bloom all year round.
