Over 724 311 learners registered for the exam, and 705 291 wrote. The class of 2024 has obtained 47.8% Bachelor passes [337,158 matrics], up significantly from 40.9 percent in 2023. The number of bachelor passes also increased by 6.9 percentage points.

“While the matric pass rate does not tell us about the quality of education outcomes that our schooling system is achieving, it is an important indicator of progress,” said Basic Education minister Siviwe Dwarube.
“It simply tells us what percentage of learners who wrote the National Senior Certificate achieved the minimum pass requirements for this qualification. To pass the National Senior Certificate, learners are not required simply to get 30% across all subjects, which is often misconceived to be the only pass requirement for the National Senior Certificate.
“Instead, they are required to get at least 40% in their Home Language and two other subjects and at least 30% for three other subjects and must pass at least 6 out of their 7 subjects.”
