Concerns raised over increased number of pedestrians being killed
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has raised concerns about the increasing number of pedestrians being killed on the province’s roads.
This is after a recent report of three pedestrian fatalities on Saturday, 21 December 2024. The concerns are consistent with concerns Transport Minister Barbara Creecy raised in her mid-festive season road safety campaign statistics released last week.

The statistics show that pedestrians account for 45.6% of fatalities nationwide, followed by passengers (26.8%), drivers (26.7%), and cyclists (0.74%) since the beginning of this festive season.
“As we mourn and extend our condolences to the bereaved families and friends, these tragic incidents underscore the urgent need for road users to be cautious,” the department said.
“As we work to reduce reckless behaviour on our roads and decrease road fatalities, we urge all road users to be extremely cautious. Pedestrians should stay alert and visible, especially in low-light conditions, and avoid walking while intoxicated. We also encourage pedestrians to use designated crossings and bridges whenever possible.
“Drivers should be attentive and courteous, avoiding excessive speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence of intoxicating substances or alcohol. Reckless driving can have devastating consequences, affecting pedestrians and drivers’ loved ones,” they said.
NUMBER OF PEDESTRIANS BEING KILLED ON THE ROADS IS INCREASING IN LIMPOPO
“We call upon community leaders, traditional authorities, and the religious fraternity to help promote road safety during gatherings and events. By working together, we can prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure safer roads.”
Meanwhile, a 44-year-old driver was caught speeding at 202 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 near Tobia’s Waterberg District on 20 December. The driver is scheduled to appear in the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court today.
This incident brings the total number of motorists arrested for excessive speeding in the province to seven since 1 December 2024. Furthermore, officers have arrested 170 drivers for drunk driving since 1 December 2024.
